Two hours from Kigali, the road begins to climb. The air cools. And then, suddenly, the Virunga volcanoes rise out of the haze — five peaks marking the edge of one of Africa’s most remarkable landscapes.
Kinigi, at the base of the park, is the gateway for gorilla trekking. But the area rewards travellers who stay longer than a single night. Musanze town and the surrounding foothills offer hiking, cycling, coffee, and some of the best lodge food in the country.
What to do beyond the gorillas
Start with the foothills. The hike to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo takes in terraced farmland and offers views back towards the volcanoes. Guided walks through nearby villages explain how land is farmed and shared, and community cooperatives welcome visitors.

Cycling is excellent: quiet roads, steep climbs, and cool air. Mountain bike routes range from gentle valley loops to serious ascents towards the park boundary.
People come for one hour with the gorillas and leave wishing they had booked a week.

Coffee, crafts, and caves
The region grows some of Rwanda’s best coffee, and several washing stations offer tours during harvest. Musanze’s craft cooperatives sell baskets, wood carvings, and textiles at fair prices. The Musanze Caves, a 2-kilometre lava tube, add an unusual half-day excursion.
- Getting there: about two hours by road from Kigali; buses run regularly
- Best months: June–September and December–February for drier trails
- Pack: layers, rain jacket, hiking shoes, and cash for community visits
- Stay: from simple guesthouses in town to forest lodges near the park gate

Where to eat and sleep
Musanze town has a growing restaurant scene serving grilled meats, local vegetables, and excellent coffee. Lodges near Kinigi offer full-board stays with volcano views, fires in the evening, and early breakfasts for trekkers.
Book early in high season: gorilla permits and good rooms sell out months ahead, and weekends fill with Kigali residents escaping the heat.

The quiet season advantage
Visit in the shoulder months and you get misty mornings, fewer people, and lower rates. The volcanoes are arguably more beautiful in cloud — appearing and disappearing as the weather moves across the ridges.
Either way, bring a good jacket. At 2,000 metres and above, mornings are cold and evenings arrive fast.
